The WHO, WHAT, WHY, WHERE, and HOW of Project Soil©
|

| WHAT is
Project Soil? |
Project Soil© is an educational
program designed to teach the importance of soil, types of soil, erosion processes, and
soil conservation principles. It was developed by Mary Shanks, 2nd grade teacher at
Capitan, New Mexico. |
WHO can benefit from Project Soil©? |
- Kindergarten through Fourth Grade
- Boy and Girl Scouts
- Campfire Girls
- 4-H Clubs |
| WHY
Project Soil? |
A good understanding and appreciation
of our natural resources is essential to enable our young people to deal with
environmental problems they will face. Soil, our basic resource, should be understood and
protected if our country and our planet is to remain productive and strong. To do this a
unique approach to teaching this important principle is needed. |
| WHERE
can I email for more information? |
uhswcd@lookingglass.net |
| HOW
can this be implemented in my school? |
Your local Soil and
Water Conservation District should use this as part of their information and education
programs. One approach is to personally contact a teacher, principal, school board member,
or scout or 4-H leader and introduce the program to them. It may also be used in
combination with Soil Stewardship Week, outdoor classrooms, 'Project Learning Tree',
'Project Wild', and teacher workshops. |
| HOW
is Project Soil taught?
Can this be used as part of the overal curriculum?
|
The approach to Project
Soil is that everything needed to teach about soil is included in a kit:
- Hands-on activities
- Three types of soil
- Lesson Plans for each day
- Bulletin board aides
- Pictures (8x10) showing erosion
- Flip-chart of common conservation
practiceAbsolutely! Project Soil is an excellent tool
to teach Earth Science objectives. Also, it can be used in a whole language approach with
stories, creative writing, art, etc. Several examples are included in the lesson plans. |
